$3.2 Billion in Accra Property Faces Growing Flood Risk

More than $3.2 billion worth of property in Greater Accra is now exposed to flooding because of unchecked development. A government audit could put thousands of buildings constructed on waterways under scrutiny.

Unauthorised construction on waterways and wetlands is placing an estimated $3.2 billion in property and economic assets across Greater Accra at risk of flooding.

Following severe floods in June, the Ghanaian government has ordered a nationwide assessment of flood-prone areas, with buildings found obstructing drainage channels likely to face enforcement action.

Planning experts say weak regulation and illegal development have worsened the city's flood vulnerability despite years of warnings.

As authorities step up enforcement and flood mitigation projects, developers and property owners may face increasing pressure to comply with stricter land-use regulations.
