Lagos Moves to Blacklist Fraudulent Estate Agents as EFCC Steps Up Property Fraud Fight

Nigeria’s anti-graft agency is pushing Lagos regulators to publish a deny list of fraudulent estate agents and developers. The proposed measure could give property buyers a stronger tool for checking who they trust with their money.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has urged the Lagos State Real Estate Regulatory Authority (LASRERA) to establish and publish a deny list of estate agents and developers found guilty of fraudulent practices. The proposal emerged from discussions between the two agencies on strengthening cooperation against property fraud in Lagos.
The proposed register would give prospective buyers and investors another way to check property professionals before entering transactions. Concerns include document forgery, multiple sales of the same property and other fraudulent practices that have weakened confidence in Nigeria’s real estate market.
The push comes alongside broader enforcement efforts in Lagos. The state government reported recovering more than ₦270 million for victims of fraudulent estate agents and property developers in 2026, while LASRERA has expanded public awareness and verification initiatives.
If implemented with transparent due-process safeguards and regularly updated records, the deny list could strengthen consumer protection, improve investor confidence and make it harder for fraudulent operators to remain active in Lagos’ property market.
