Kano is putting more than 2,000 residential plots into the hands of families as it tackles housing shortages and planned urban growth. The initiative could unlock new construction and create long-term property wealth if infrastructure keeps pace.
Kano State has allocated more than 2,000 residential plots under a programme designed to expand homeownership, reduce the housing deficit and encourage planned urban growth. Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf says the initiative is intended to help families secure land for homes while creating assets capable of supporting long-term wealth.
The programme also highlights the importance of secure land access in increasing housing supply, particularly where households and developers face difficulties obtaining properly documented plots. By encouraging beneficiaries to develop rather than immediately sell their allocations, the state hopes to stimulate construction and strengthen residential communities.
Its success, however, will depend heavily on whether roads, drainage, electricity and water infrastructure reach the new communities as planned.
