Lagos Flags Over 27,000 Illegal Building Violations in Three Years
Written on
Lagos authorities say illegal construction is spiraling across Africa’s fastest-growing city. More than 27,000 building violations have been uncovered as regulators intensify enforcement against unsafe developments.
The Lagos State Government says it recorded 27,233 building violations between May 2023 and April 2026 as enforcement efforts against illegal developments intensified across the city. Officials disclosed the figures during a ministerial briefing reviewing urban planning and construction activities statewide.
Authorities say many of the violations involved developers building without approvals, exceeding approved plans, or failing to meet structural safety requirements. The crackdown comes amid growing concerns over building collapses, rapid urbanisation, and pressure on Lagos’ already strained infrastructure systems.
The state is also expanding digital approval systems and stricter monitoring as it pushes to formalise construction activity and improve safety compliance across Nigeria’s commercial capital.
