Kenya’s Housing Crisis Is Leaving Thousands on the Streets

Written on

Thousands of Kenyans are living on streets and in informal shelters as housing becomes increasingly out of reach. The crisis is exposing the growing gap between rising need and available affordable homes.

Kenya’s housing crisis is pushing thousands of people into homelessness and informal living conditions, particularly in urban areas such as Nairobi. Poverty, displacement, and limited access to affordable housing continue to leave many families without stable shelter, with tens of thousands estimated to be living on the streets.

The situation highlights the growing challenge of balancing rapid urbanisation with adequate housing supply. Many low-income households are also struggling with high rental costs and poor living conditions in informal settlements. Kenya currently faces a housing deficit estimated at around 2 million homes, placing additional pressure on policymakers and developers. While the government’s affordable housing programme is expanding construction efforts, the scale of demand suggests the housing challenge extends beyond buildings to jobs, affordability, and long-term urban planning.
