Kenya Pushes Africa’s Largest Housing Construction Drive

Kenya says it is leading Africa’s biggest housing expansion with hundreds of thousands of homes in the pipeline. The move is aimed at tackling a housing crisis affecting millions living in informal settlements.
Kenya is accelerating a major housing construction programme as the government seeks to reduce the country’s housing deficit and improve living conditions for millions. Speaking during the World Urban Forum summit in Baku, President William Ruto said more than 1,100 informal settlements currently house around 7 million people across Kenya.
The initiative matters because it represents one of the continent’s most aggressive attempts to address urban housing challenges through large-scale development and financing reforms. Authorities are working to reduce construction costs, expand partnerships with industry professionals, and scale projects from dozens of homes to thousands of units. Kenya says 273,000 apartments are already under development, while a broader pipeline of about 700,000 housing units is being prepared.
