Ghanaian Lawyers Push for Fairer Spousal Property Laws
Written on
Women’s rights advocates in Ghana say current property laws still leave many spouses financially vulnerable after divorce. Legal experts are now calling for reforms that better reflect unpaid domestic and caregiving contributions.
The African Women Lawyers Association (AWLA) Ghana is calling for reforms to strengthen fairness in spousal property distribution following divorce and marital separation.
The group argues that existing legal frameworks still fail to adequately protect spouses, particularly women, who contribute to households through unpaid caregiving and domestic work.
AWLA says clearer legal standards are needed to reduce disputes over jointly acquired property and improve financial protection for vulnerable spouses.
The debate also highlights wider concerns around inheritance rights, housing security, and property ownership within Ghana’s evolving urban and family structures. Legal advocates believe stronger reforms could significantly influence future housing stability and wealth distribution for families across the country.
