Ghana Pushes for Special Rent Courts Amid Housing Disputes

Ghana’s Rent Control Department wants dedicated courts to handle rising landlord-tenant disputes faster. Officials say weak enforcement of rent laws is worsening pressure on tenants, especially students.
Ghana’s Rent Control Department has opened discussions with the Judicial Service to establish specialised rent courts aimed at speeding up landlord-tenant disputes and improving enforcement of rental laws nationwide.
The move comes amid growing complaints over arbitrary rent increases, excessive advance payments, and weak compliance with existing housing regulations.

The proposed reforms are part of a broader enforcement campaign that includes stricter inspections, a national landlord and tenant database, and new standardised tenancy agreements expected later this year.
Officials believe dedicated rent courts could mark one of Ghana’s biggest rental market reforms in decades if fully implemented.
