Ghana’s Rent Control Department has defended its decision to intervene in student hostel pricing, arguing that the move is necessary to stop unauthorized rent increases and protect students from unfair charges. Acting Rent Commissioner Frederick Opoku said investigations and field assessments found that many operators had adjusted prices for years without approval required under existing law.
The issue matters because rising accommodation costs around tertiary institutions have become a growing burden for students and families already facing broader cost-of-living pressures. Authorities say new measures will require formal assessments before rents can be adjusted, while a planned digital platform will allow students to report illegal increases. Officials insist the goal is not to discourage private investment but to create a more transparent and sustainable student housing market.
