Gauteng is emerging as a key destination for South Africa’s first-time homebuyers, driven by population growth, employment opportunities, and improving access to mortgage finance. Property industry data shows younger buyers are increasingly entering the market, with first-time buyer demand reaching more than 44% of loan applications in Johannesburg and 57% in parts of Gauteng South and East.
Banks are supporting the trend with lower deposit requirements and more competitive lending products, while relatively affordable property prices continue to attract young professionals. Industry experts say Gauteng’s growing population, expanding job market, and rising incomes position the province to capture a significant share of future housing demand, even as global economic risks remain a concern.
