The Nigerian Army has inaugurated new accommodation and welfare facilities at two military cantonments in Ibadan, Oyo State, in a move aimed at improving the living conditions of troops and their families.
Chief of Army Staff Lt Gen Waidi Shaibu commissioned the projects on Thursday at the Adekunle Fajuyi and Letmauck cantonments, represented by the General Officer Commanding 2 Division, Maj Gen Auwalu Mahmuda. He said the facilities were designed to provide personnel with decent accommodation, clean water, reliable electricity, adequate security and a healthy living environment, and urged beneficiaries to maintain them, warning that neglect could undermine their purpose.
At Adekunle Fajuyi Cantonment, the facilities include two 10-man transit accommodation units for corporals and below, five blocks of 36 family accommodation units and two Regimental Sergeant Majors' houses for the 2 Military Intelligence Brigade and 502 Signal Brigade.
At Letmauck Cantonment, the projects include the 81 Battalion Officers' Mess, sports facilities and semi-detached three-bedroom married officers' quarters.
Brig Gen Uchechukwu Okoroji, commander of 42 Engineer Brigade, said the condition of the structures before the intervention had become a major welfare concern. Lt Col Chiemezie Innocent Asogwa, commanding officer of 81 Battalion, said the intervention reflected the army chief's 'Soldiers First' focus on living and working conditions for personnel and their families.
