Traders return to Pokuase-Nsawam road reserve at Dobro as assembly promises clearance

Written on

Container shops, sand and chippings traders and concrete-mixer rentals have reappeared inside the 90-metre reservation of the Pokuase-Nsawam Highway at Dobro in the Eastern Region, despite an earlier demolition exercise.

Commercial activity has returned to the road reservation of the Pokuase-Nsawam Highway at Dobro in the Eastern Region, where container shops, sand and chippings businesses and concrete-mixer rental services have appeared inside the 90-metre reservation.

The affected stretch, particularly in front of fruit processing company Blue Skies, is now occupied by containers and heavy-duty tipper trucks using the space between the main highway and the road linking to Dobro. The activity comes despite a previous demolition exercise to remove structures encroaching on the reservation ahead of the highway's construction.

The development has raised questions about compliance with road reservation requirements and enforcement. Containers have also been placed directly beneath high-voltage electricity transmission pylons, and the movement of heavy trucks in the narrow space could obstruct traffic and increase the risk of collisions, while occupying land required for ongoing road works.

Prince Asimani, head of estates at Blue Skies, said the situation requires urgent attention. He said the company had previously agreed with the chiefs of Dobro to landscape the area, but the landscaping was destroyed during road construction. Blue Skies has written to the municipal chief executive and coordinating director, and has appealed to the Ministry of Roads and Highways, the Eastern Regional Minister, the Municipal Assembly and the police to intervene.

The Municipal Assembly responded to the concerns by assuring that it will take the necessary steps to remove facilities encroaching on the affected areas.
