Tanzania to inaugurate $270m Mtumba Government City phase two in Dodoma

Tanzania will on September 8, 2026 inaugurate the second phase of the Mtumba Government City in Dodoma, a Sh698 billion ($270 million) complex intended to accelerate the consolidation of ministries and state institutions in the country's administrative capital.
President Samia Suluhu Hassan will inaugurate the development, which comprises 26 ministry office buildings, 11 government institutions and 57.1 kilometres of paved roads, Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office, Prof Palamagamba Kabudi, told journalists on Sunday.
The phase-two project, which began in October 2021, will provide office space for approximately 18,510 government employees. It also includes 42 kilometres of underground electricity infrastructure, water and wastewater systems, telecommunications networks, security installations and fire and rescue facilities.
Kabudi said the city was being developed as a "smart and green city", with plans to utilise solar energy, harvest rainwater and maximise natural lighting and ventilation. The second phase follows an initial development of 23 office buildings completed in 2019.
The project forms part of Tanzania's broader effort to complete the transfer of government operations from Dar es Salaam to Dodoma, bringing together officials currently working from scattered locations across the city in a central administrative hub.
