Relief for South African Homeowners as SARB Holds Interest Rates Steady

Written on

Despite fears of a pre-emptive rate hike driven by rising inflation, the South African Reserve Bank holds the repo rate steady at 7.00%, offering bonded property owners much-needed financial breathing room.

Property owners across South Africa received unexpected financial relief as the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) voted 4–2 to keep the benchmark repo rate unchanged at 7.00%, maintaining the prime lending rate at 10.50%.

The decision comes after intense market speculation and widespread expectations among financial analysts of a 25-basis-point interest rate hike following June's consumer price inflation (CPI) figures, which breached preferred targets to reach 5.0% year-on-year.

Reserve Bank Governor Lesetja Kganyago noted that while short-term inflation risks persist—largely driven by volatile international fuel prices and rising municipal tariffs—underlying pricing outside energy remains contained.

Major real estate and home-loan institutions, including Pam Golding Properties, Seeff, and the ooba Group, welcomed the decision, emphasizing that stable borrowing costs will provide crucial certainty for overextended households and help sustain buyer demand in the residential housing market.

However, economists warn that with persistent geopolitical risks and global market uncertainty, homeowners should continue budgeting cautiously as the central bank maintains a vigilant stance on future monetary policy moves.
