Lagos shuts 12 luxury buildings in Lekki and Ikeja over dangerous elevator violations

Brasas Mall, The Heritage building, and 10 other high-profile properties were sealed this week. The crackdown follows a Banana Island elevator incident that went viral on social media.

The Lagos State Safety Commission has sealed over 12 commercial and residential properties across Lekki Phase I and Ikeja after owners repeatedly ignored mandatory elevator registration deadlines.

Among the properties shut down are Brasas Mall on Admiralty Way, The Heritage/AXA on Awolowo Road, 10Bou Towers, Lekki Luxury Flats, and several boutique hotels.

The enforcement follows a March 31, 2026 certification deadline that was partly triggered by a Banana Island incident where residents were trapped in a lift for over an hour — filmed and streamed live online.

Authorities have warned the buildings will remain sealed until full compliance is achieved, signalling a new era of regulatory enforcement across Lagos's rapidly expanding high-rise market.
