Interior Principal Secretary Dr Raymond Omollo has said families relocated to clear space for urban renewal in Kibera are issued identification cards that will ensure they receive first priority during allocation once construction wraps up.
The ongoing development in Soweto Zone B forms part of the government's Affordable Housing Program. Phase one features 18 high-rise blocks comprising 4,054 units, while clearance and site preparation are underway for a second phase covering Zones C and D, where a contractor is expected to add 15,000 units.
The broader master plan integrates commercial spaces, retail outlets, community halls, early childhood development centres and health clinics. Infrastructure works include water, electricity, sewerage, stormwater drainage and solid waste systems.
Dr Omollo noted that long-term national growth frameworks such as Kenya Beyond Vision 2030 cannot be sustained while parts of Nairobi carry informal settlement labels. He said construction activities in the area generate employment and local business opportunities for youth and women.
The priority card framework seeks to guarantee that families displaced by initial site clearance retain access to the new housing stock upon completion.
