Kenya's land commission moves to acquire 13 Kiambu parcels for A8 highway expansion

Kenya's National Land Commission intends to acquire 13 parcels in Kiambu County for the James Gichuru Junction-Rironi highway project, after years of court battles over compensation.
Kenya's National Land Commission (NLC) is set to acquire 13 parcels of land in Kiambu County for the James Gichuru Junction-Rironi Highway (A8) expansion project, acting on behalf of the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA).
A gazette notice dated 4 September 2026 cites Section 110 of the Land Act and follows earlier notices issued in 2020, 2021 and 2023 for the same road project. The affected parcels span roughly 0.62 hectares across Dagoretti (Uthiru, Kinoo and Kangemi), Limuru (Rironi) and Muguga (Gitaru) along the busy A8 corridor.
Most of the registered owners are still listed as yet to be determined, though two landowners are named directly in the notice. The KSh 20.4 billion project has been repeatedly challenged in court, including a 2019 petition by Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah - decided in 2024 - over delayed compensation for project-affected persons, and a 2021 case disputing the compensation valuation for a parcel in Dagoretti/Kinoo.
Affected persons have been asked to attend a public inquiry at the Kinoo Chief's Office on 30 October, where they can raise objections or compensation claims. Anyone with an interest in the land must submit a written compensation claim with their ID, PIN, ownership documents and bank details to the NLC offices at Ardhi House in Nairobi or the Kiambu County co-ordinator's office.
