Kenya moves to compulsorily acquire Wajir land for new military air base

Written on

The National Land Commission has gazetted the acquisition of a 0.8401-hectare parcel in Wajir Township for a proposed air base, alongside land for LAPSSET, two bridges and a Murang'a water project.

The National Land Commission (NLC) has announced plans to compulsorily acquire private land for a proposed military air base on behalf of the Ministry of Defence, in a gazette notice dated October 30.

The land identified for the Wajir Air Base project is parcel number Wajir Township Block 2/1424, measuring 0.8401 hectares and registered to Elyas Sheikh Abdinoor. The notice states that the commission intends to acquire the parcel under section 110 of the Land Act on behalf of the ministry.

The same batch of notices, issued under the Land Act (Cap. 280) and signed by NLC chairman Dr Abdillahi Saggaf Alawy, covers the LAPSSET Corridor project in Lamu, two bridge projects in Narok, Kisii and Bomet counties, land adjoining Kenyatta Barracks in Nakuru, and the Murang'a Cluster Water and Sewerage Project on behalf of the Athi Water Works Development Agency.

For LAPSSET, the commission published a deletion, corrigendum and addendum to an earlier acquisition intention, with a deletion schedule listing 57 parcels in the 13601 series whose registered owners are indicated as to be determined. The land plans can be inspected at Ardhi House in Nairobi and at the county coordinator's office in Lamu.

NLC also proposed acquiring four parcels in Narok County for the Maghor River Bridge on the Kilgoris-Lolgorian (B3) Road and four parcels in Kisii and Bomet for the Mugeni Bridge on the Kaplong-Kisii (B6) Highway. A separate notice schedules a December 1 inquiry into a five-acre property, LR 3777/408, registered to Humphrey Maruguru, adjoining Kenyatta Barracks, and a November 18 inquiry into two Lamu properties registered to Amine Limited, LR 28107 of 84.65 hectares and LR 28108 of 218.9 hectares.

Claimants are required to submit a written claim, national identity card, KRA PIN certificate, land ownership documents and bank account details, while companies must add a certificate of incorporation, CR12, company KRA PIN and identification and PIN details for directors. The documents are to be presented at Ardhi House, Room 305, and at the Lamu county coordinator's office.
