Kano to build 5,000 homes in N150bn Gida-Gida Mega City drive

The Kano State Government plans to build 5,000 houses under its Gida-Gida Mega City programme at Rijiyar Gwan-Gwan, with the wider housing and infrastructure package put at more than N150 billion and delivery projected within eight to 24 months.
The Kano State Government will build 5,000 houses as part of efforts to provide convenient and affordable accommodation for residents, with the flagship scheme to be known as the Gida-Gida Mega City and sited at Rijiyar Gwan-Gwan along the Kano-Wudil-Maiduguri highway.
The Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, and his counterpart in the Ministry of Housing Development, Architect Ibrahim Yakubu Adamu, disclosed the plan while briefing members of the Nigerian Guild of Editors after a tour of the project site in Kano.
Waiya said the housing projects form part of the urban and rural expansion initiative of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, which also covers the construction of roads and bridges and the upgrading of security and basic infrastructure at the Kwankwasiyya, Amana and Bandirawo housing estates, alongside projects in health and education.
Architect Adamu said the initiative also involves the construction of 50 houses in Rural Model Cities across various local government areas, with roads, schools, police stations, water supply, sewage and drainage systems, shopping areas and other amenities to make the estates suitable for occupation.
According to the housing commissioner, the projects will cost more than N150 billion and are expected to be completed within eight to 24 months, with funding assured after approval by the State Executive Council. The Gida-Gida Mega City site will offer three-bedroom and five-bedroom options as well as terraces, compensation has been paid to landowners, and the state has put a housing policy in place since the ministry was created in 2025 to align with the National Housing Policy.
