Housing Finance Bank urges more capital for real estate to drive Uganda's growth at REDi Mbarara

Housing Finance Bank said financing businesses, housing and infrastructure is critical to Uganda's target of growing the economy to $500 billion by 2040, at the REDi Mbarara real estate and infrastructure conference.

Uganda's ambition to grow its economy from approximately $50 billion to $500 billion by 2040 will depend on how effectively capital is channelled into the businesses, housing and infrastructure that drive economic activity, according to Housing Finance Bank.

The bank made the case at the REDi Mbarara 2026 - Ankole Real Estate and Infrastructure Conference organised by Knight Frank Uganda, which brought together investors, developers, policymakers and financial institutions to examine opportunities in Western Uganda, particularly in real estate, infrastructure and regional investment.

Joel Matsiko, Acting Head of Business and Institutional Banking at Housing Finance Bank, said Uganda's Tenfold Growth Strategy presents a significant opportunity for financial institutions to direct capital towards productive sectors, including housing development and infrastructure.

Joseph Enyimu, Commissioner for Economic Development Policy and Research at Uganda's Ministry of Finance, spoke on financing regional growth, while Nelson Tugume of Inspire Africa highlighted emerging investment opportunities in Ntungamo, including the development of Uganda's 'Coffee City'.

Matsiko said stronger collaboration between government, investors, developers and financial institutions will be essential to converting regional opportunities into sustainable economic activity, adding that Housing Finance Bank's role is to provide financial solutions that support growth across Uganda's regions.
