GIDI breaks ground on free social housing for vulnerable women in Lagos

Written on

The GIDI Company has begun construction of a social housing project offering free accommodation to vulnerable and displaced women, including widows, funded partly from its commercial real estate profits.

The GIDI Company has officially broken ground on the GIDI Social Housing Initiative, a project that links its commercial real estate business to the provision of free, dignified housing for vulnerable members of society.

The developer said the first phase targets vulnerable and displaced women, including widows, who will receive safe accommodation at no cost. Beneficiary identification will be carried out in collaboration with the Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.

The company disclosed the groundbreaking and turning-of-the-sod ceremony in a statement, saying the project is part of its broader "Building Africa" agenda and follows more than a year of planning.

Unlike a one-off corporate social responsibility project, GIDI said the initiative is structured as a sustainable model in which a percentage of company profits and contributions linked to qualifying property transactions are channelled towards social housing, allowing commercial growth to fund social impact.

GIDI said clients, institutional partners and other stakeholders will be able to participate in funding and delivering the homes, and it plans to scale the initiative through additional funding and partnerships.
