Ghana plans high-rise container housing for Korle Lagoon slum in Accra

Ghana's Local Government Minister Mahama Ayariga has announced plans to redevelop the Korle Lagoon slum in Accra into high-rise container housing, beginning with a military-led evacuation and clearing of the dumpsite.
Mr Mahama Ayariga, Ghana's Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, has announced plans to transform the slum settlement along the Korle Lagoon in Accra into high-rise container housing, as part of renewed government efforts to improve sanitation and public health in the capital.
Speaking during a working visit to the area on Thursday, the minister said redevelopment will commence after a military-led evacuation and clearing of the dumpsite, with all waste cleared from the site transported to the Adepa Waste Management Centre at Nsawam.
The project will also include the dredging of the Korle Lagoon to address long-standing environmental and sanitation challenges, according to the minister. The visit formed part of earlier inspections of waste fill sites in the Greater Accra and Eastern Regions.
Mr Ayariga, also the National Democratic Congress Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, acknowledged there may be resistance from affected residents but maintained that the greater public interest in a clean and healthy Accra must prevail.
He expressed confidence that the exercise will receive broad public support, saying those who want the area cleared are more numerous than those who may resist the clearing.
