Construction Begins on New R18 Billion City Near Sandton

Written on

One of South Africa’s biggest privately funded city projects is officially underway near Sandton. The R18 billion development plans to deliver up to 20,000 homes alongside retail, logistics, and transport infrastructure.

Construction has started on the R18 billion Bankenveld District City, a massive mixed-use development being built near Sandton in Gauteng. Developed by Calgro M3 and Eris Property Group, the 300-hectare project is expected to include at least 20,000 residential units alongside retail, logistics, healthcare, and educational facilities.

The privately funded city is strategically located near the Marlboro Gautrain station and major transport routes, reflecting growing demand for integrated urban developments close to economic hubs.

Developers say the project could help address Johannesburg’s housing pressures while also driving commercial growth and infrastructure investment.

The full build-out is expected to take between 15 and 20 years, making it one of South Africa’s most ambitious long-term urban developments.
