Cape Town Greenlights 970 Affordable Homes at Salt River Market

Written on

A historic Cape Town market is being transformed into nearly 1,000 affordable homes in a major inner-city housing push. The project is part of a broader plan to deliver more than 3,000 affordable units on underused public land.

Cape Town has officially handed over the historic Salt River Market site for the development of 970 affordable housing units, marking another milestone in the city’s inner-city housing strategy. The project will include 300 social housing apartments for rental and 670 affordable market-rate homes, alongside retail space, a daycare centre, and recreational facilities.

City officials say the development forms part of a larger programme to deliver more than 3,000 affordable homes across four strategically located sites. By repurposing underutilised public land, Cape Town aims to expand housing access closer to jobs, transport, and essential services. Construction is expected to begin this year, with units targeting households earning up to R34,000 per month.
