South Africa’s Historic London Embassy Shuts After Years of Neglect

One of South Africa’s most prestigious overseas properties has been forced to close. Years of poor maintenance have left the historic London landmark requiring repairs estimated at nearly R70 million.
South Africa House, the country's historic High Commission building in London's Trafalgar Square, has temporarily closed after deteriorating infrastructure made parts of the property unsuitable for use.
Reports cite failing heating systems, plumbing issues and extensive maintenance backlogs, with repairs expected to cost close to R70 million.
The closure has disrupted diplomatic operations and renewed scrutiny of how South Africa manages its overseas property portfolio.
While critics blame years of neglect, the Department of International Relations and Cooperation says the closure forms part of a planned refurbishment programme that includes asbestos management and major building upgrades.
