Demolition Threat Puts Federal Workers’ Housing Scheme at Risk

Written on

Thousands of Nigerian civil servants could lose homes they have spent years paying for. A land dispute threatening a government-backed housing scheme is now raising fears of industrial action.

A government-backed housing scheme for federal workers in Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory is facing uncertainty after a demolition notice reportedly targeted homes under construction in the Bamishi Cadastral District.

Labour unions say thousands of civil servants have invested billions of naira into the Federal Integrated Staff Housing (FISH) Programme through salary deductions and are now at risk of losing their investments.

The dispute has exposed longstanding challenges around land administration and overlapping allocations in the FCT, prompting unions to demand urgent government intervention. They warn that failure to resolve the issue could trigger industrial unrest while undermining confidence in government-backed affordable housing initiatives.
