UN housing rapporteur Koldo Casla begins two-week visit to Ghana

UN Special Rapporteur on the right to adequate housing Koldo Casla is visiting Ghana from 28 September to 9 October 2026 to assess housing law and practice, including access to public housing, private-sector affordability and habitability standards.
The UN Special Rapporteur on the right to adequate housing, Koldo Casla, is undertaking an official visit to Ghana from 28 September to 9 October 2026 to examine how the right to adequate housing is protected and realised in national law and practice.
The visit will cover access to public housing, affordability in the private sector, habitability standards and access to essential services, as well as the effects of the climate crisis on the right to adequate housing and the participation of residents in decisions on housing and urban development.
Mr Casla will travel to the Greater Accra metropolitan area, Tamale and surrounding communities, and Cape Coast. He is scheduled to meet national and local government officials, civil society representatives and economic actors, and will also meet tenants, people living in informal settlements and people experiencing homelessness to hear their experiences and concerns.
A press conference is planned for 9 October 2026 at 11:30 a.m. at the UN Resident Coordinator's Office in North Ridge, Accra, with access limited to journalists. The Special Rapporteur is expected to present a report on the visit to the UN Human Rights Council in March 2027.
Special Rapporteurs form part of the Special Procedures of the Human Rights Council, the largest body of independent experts within the UN human rights system, serving as independent fact-finding and monitoring mechanisms. They work on a voluntary basis, are not UN staff and serve in their individual capacities.
