Egypt's PM reviews Greening Cairo plan after 3,000 trees planted

Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly inspected afforestation works in Cairo on 27 September, where officials reported more than 3,000 trees and nearly 700,000 shrubs and plants already planted under the Greening Cairo plan.
Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly has reaffirmed Egypt's drive to expand tree cover and green spaces along major roads and corridors, medians and the entrances to governorate centres and cities, saying the work is meant to raise the per capita share of green space and improve quality of life.
Mr Madbouly made the remarks on Sunday, 27 September 2026, while inspecting agricultural and afforestation projects in Cairo Governorate, accompanied by Minister of Local Development and Environment Manal Awad and Cairo Governor Ibrahim Saber. His tour included afforestation works beneath the Ibrahim El-Orabi Bridge, formerly known as the Tenth Bridge.
Cairo Governor Ibrahim Saber said the governorate's plan is proceeding on two parallel tracks: raising awareness of the importance of planting and preserving green areas, and intensifying tree planting along major roads, streets and land suitable for cultivation. He said Cairo engaged a consultancy specialising in afforestation to select species suited to Egypt's environment, focusing on shade-providing trees that require relatively little water.
Selection criteria included rapid growth, adequate shade, resilience to climatic conditions and compatibility with sustainable irrigation methods, to preserve vegetation while rationalising water consumption. The species planted include acacia, neem, khaya, elephant's foot, poinciana and the golden shower tree.
Mr Saber said the consultancy's plan has already begun to be implemented, with more than 3,000 trees and nearly 700,000 shrubs and plants planted along a number of major roads and corridors and on vacant land. Ms Awad said the ministry continues to support governorates in carrying out directives to expand afforestation and increase green spaces while preserving existing trees and improving open areas.
