More than 24,000 South Africans have become legal homeowners through a privately funded land reform programme. The initiative is turning long-time municipal tenants into property owners with transferable assets.

The Khaya Lam land reform programme has helped transfer more than 24,000 title deeds to underprivileged South Africans since 2013, converting municipal tenants into legal homeowners at no cost to beneficiaries.

The initiative has been largely funded by billionaire Johann Rupert, alongside the Reinet Foundation and Remgro, which together contributed R50 million to expand the programme.
