South Africa has rejected Nigeria’s request for compensation for citizens who abandoned businesses and properties while leaving the country amid recent anti-migrant tensions.
Nigeria had begun documenting assets left behind, including businesses, vehicles and other properties, as part of a possible compensation claim.
The South African government says it will not provide compensation, arguing that legally owned properties remain protected under existing laws and can be sold through normal market channels.
The dispute highlights wider concerns around migrant investment security, property rights and cross-border business confidence as African economies become increasingly interconnected.
