South Africa is moving to crack down on illegal land occupations with tougher penalties. New rules could see people who incite property invasions face millions in fines or jail time.
South Africa is proposing tougher measures against illegal land invasions and unlawful occupation of private property through amendments to the Prevention of Illegal Eviction from and Unlawful Occupation of Land Act.
The proposed changes would introduce penalties of up to R2 million or imprisonment for individuals who organise or encourage illegal occupations.
The reforms aim to protect property owners, municipalities and state land from organised land-grabbing syndicates while reducing lengthy eviction disputes.
However, the legislation also maintains protections for vulnerable occupants by requiring courts to consider issues such as alternative accommodation during eviction proceedings.
