Ruto lays foundation for 340-bed hostel in Sh2bn Taita-Taveta student housing drive

President William Ruto has laid the foundation stone for a Sh145 million, 340-bed student hostel at Wumingu Technical and Vocational College in Wundanyi, part of a Sh2 billion hostel programme in Taita-Taveta County.
President William Ruto has laid the foundation stone for a 340-bed student hostel project at Wumingu Technical and Vocational College in Wundanyi Constituency, Taita-Taveta County. The Sh145 million project is part of the Government's Affordable Housing Programme and is aimed at expanding student accommodation.
Ruto laid the foundation stone at Funju in Wundanyi on Saturday, September 26, after returning to Kenya from international engagements. Several senior government officials, including Senate Speaker Amason Kingi and Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya, welcomed him to Taita-Taveta before he proceeded with his programme in the county.
The Wumingu TVC hostel is part of a wider government plan to provide additional accommodation for students enrolled in higher and technical education institutions. Ruto said the Government is investing Sh2 billion in Taita-Taveta to construct hostels that will accommodate about 5,000 students from universities, technical colleges and the Kenya Medical Training College.
He said the investment is intended to address students' accommodation needs while supporting the expansion of tertiary and technical education facilities. The new hostels at Wumingu TVC will provide 340 beds for students at the institution, which is located about 10 kilometres north of Wundanyi town.
Ruto added that the government would also tarmac the road from Wundanyi town to the college and ensure reliable access to water and electricity for the institution and the local community.
