Okongo completes 55 serviced residential plots to ease housing demand

Written on

Okongo Village Council has finished 55 fully serviced residential plots at Block 103 using N$5.6 million from the Ministry of Urban and Rural Development, with allocation to follow the council's waiting list.

Okongo Village Council in northern Namibia has completed 55 residential plots at Block 103 as part of efforts to widen access to housing and extend municipal services in the settlement.

The project was funded through N$5.6 million allocated by the Ministry of Urban and Rural Development for infrastructure, including roads and housing erven, according to the council's local economic development and communications officer, Joyce Ueitele.

Ueitele said the plots are fully serviced with water, electricity and sewerage, allowing successful applicants to begin building once land allocation and building approvals are completed. Allocation will follow the council's waiting list and existing land allocation procedures, she said.

The council has also completed 1.4 kilometres of road in Extension 1 and the new reception area after a N$1 million allocation from the Road Fund Administration. Ueitele said the upgrades have improved access in a settlement where sandy terrain had previously made movement difficult.

A separate emergency borehole project valued at N$996,000 has been completed, operating on a hybrid solar and electricity system to strengthen water supply. The council expects Block 103 to help meet demand for residential land, create homeownership opportunities and support Okongo's spatial and economic expansion.
