Nsawam and Suhum chiefs unite against Koans over ancestral land acquisitions

Written on

Traditional rulers from communities between Nsawam and Suhum in Ghana's Eastern Region have formed a common front against what they call the forceful acquisition of their ancestral lands by developer Koans Building Solutions.

Several traditional communities between Nsawam and Suhum in Ghana's Eastern Region have formed a united front to resist what they describe as the forceful acquisition of their ancestral lands by real estate developer Koans Building Solutions, GhanaWeb reported on 30 October.

The chiefs accuse the company of using land guards and state security personnel to intimidate residents while pursuing attempts to take over large stretches of land, including entire communities.

The traditional leaders claim Koans Building Solutions has over the years acquired and registered large tracts of land in its own name without the knowledge or consent of the affected chiefs and the Okyenhene, the paramount chief of the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Area.

The chiefs made their position known at a media engagement at the Ofori Panin Fie in Kyebi on Thursday, 29 October 2026, where they outlined their grievances and announced their resolve to protect the lands under their traditional jurisdiction.

They maintain that the dispute goes beyond ownership claims, arguing that the acquisition of entire communities without the consent of their traditional authorities raises wider questions about land ownership, customary rights and the security of residents.

The new alliance is intended to give the affected communities a common platform to challenge what they consider unlawful acquisitions and to resist further attempts to take control of their ancestral lands. The report did not include a response from Koans Building Solutions.
