Edition Hotels has opened The Cape Town Edition at Quay 7 on the V&A Waterfront, the brand's first property in Africa and the latest addition to the precinct's Granger Bay development.
The Cape Town Edition has opened at Quay 7 on the V&A Waterfront, overlooking the precinct's new superyacht marina and facing Table Mountain, marking the Edition brand's entry into Africa. The 142-room hotel was designed by Neri&Hu in collaboration with Cape Town-based architects, drawing on the industrial maritime character of the site and referencing the warehouse structures that previously occupied it.
Edition's global portfolio includes properties in London, New York, Tokyo, Lake Como and Barcelona. "Cape Town has a distinctive energy shaped by extraordinary landscapes, diverse influences and an exceptional culinary scene," said George Fleck, senior vice president and global brand leader for Edition. "As one of the world's most compelling cultural capitals, it is a natural home for Edition."
At the centre of the property is The Drum, a cylindrical open-air space with a spiral staircase leading to an outdoor viewing platform over the harbour, Table Mountain and the Atlantic Ocean. African art and design feature throughout: Design Network Africa sourced pieces from makers across the continent, Cape Town-based Southern Guild curated the art collection, and custom rugs were woven by KwaZulu-Natal-based Shuttleworth Weaving. The hotel has five restaurants and bars, a spa below sea level, and a ballroom seating up to 200 people.
The opening forms part of the V&A Waterfront's ongoing development of its Granger Bay precinct. "The opening of The Cape Town Edition is an important milestone in the V&A Waterfront's continued evolution and a strong expression of confidence in Cape Town as a globally competitive tourism and investment destination," said Graham Wood, chief executive officer of the V&A Waterfront. He said the Quay 7 site signals "the next chapter for Granger Bay: a well-connected waterfront district that creates long-term value".
General manager Leonie Andereya said the hotel aims to feel as relevant to Capetonians as to first-time visitors. The opening adds another international hospitality operator to Cape Town's tourism offering and extends the Waterfront's push into the Granger Bay precinct.
