KwaZulu-Natal's Maphephetheni Phase 3 project has been allocated close to R7 million for 2026/27 as national and provincial ministers hand over units north of Durban.

The Maphephetheni Phase 3 Rural Housing Project in KwaZulu-Natal is expected to provide homes to 2,286 families by 2028, with Human Settlements Minister Thembi Simelane, KwaZulu-Natal Transport and Human Settlements MEC Siboniso Duma and eThekwini mayor Cyril Xaba handing over units to beneficiaries at Maphephetheni, north of Durban.

Close to R7 million has been allocated to the project for the 2026/27 financial year. The national Department of Human Settlements said it remains committed to restoring dignity in rural communities through the eradication of mud houses, with government targeting close to 7,000 mud houses across the country.

The handover precedes a visit to KwaZulu-Natal by President Cyril Ramaphosa, who will lead the Cornubia Integrated Human Settlements Project milestone celebration in eThekwini on Thursday, October 29, 2026.

Cornubia is expected to deliver 12,593 housing units through fully subsidised Breaking New Ground housing, First Home Finance for the missing middle and social housing. The Presidency said the development has delivered close to 3,000 fully subsidised units since its launch more than a decade ago and includes a school, retail outlets and recreational facilities. It recently welcomed the first group of 2022 flood survivors into permanent homes, with construction of a further 146 units due for completion by December 2026.

Ramaphosa is also expected to visit Montclaire Lodge, the first government-owned Temporary Emergency Accommodation facility, which provides shelter to people displaced by disasters.
