Lekki Phase 1 owner petitions IGP over demolition of N1bn property despite court order

Written on

A Lagos businessman has asked the Inspector General of Police, the Police Service Commission and the National Assembly to act against a senior police officer he accuses of supervising the demolition of his Lekki Phase 1 property while a court order was in force.

Alhaji Akeem Osuolale Ogunseye has petitioned the Inspector General of Police, the Police Service Commission and the National Assembly against the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 2, AIG Jimoh Moshood, accusing him and his team of land grabbing, abuse of office and the malicious destruction of property worth more than N1 billion at Plot 77, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos. The petitions were filed through his attorneys, including human rights lawyer Marshal Abubakar.

The petitioner says he is the beneficial owner of the land, covered by Certificate of Occupancy number 50/50/1990A in Lekki Peninsula Scheme 1, issued in the name of Samuel Alao Ajibode, his elder brother, from whom he derived title on purchase. He states that he and his family have been in peaceable possession since the purchase and built a family home and the foundation for ten additional houses on the site, valued at more than N1 billion.

According to the petition, a company called Skyview Properties Limited instituted an action against Ajibode over the land, and the matter remains in active litigation. The petitioner says the court issued a subsisting stay of execution and status quo order restraining all parties, state actors and law enforcement agencies from interfering with, demolishing or altering the property pending judgment.

The petition alleges that the AIG mobilised armed tactical police units and heavy demolition machinery to the site without a valid court order or warrant of execution, flattening the property, and that officers discarded court records and the stay order when they were presented on site. It says an earlier petition dated 19 October 2026, filed through Rose of Sharon Solicitors, was acknowledged at the AIG Zone 2 office the same day. The petitioner is asking the IGP to order an investigation, initiate disciplinary action and enforce the stay of execution.

The newspaper reported that efforts to reach AIG Jimoh Moshood and Force spokespersons in Abuja for comment were unsuccessful before publication. The allegations have not been tested in court, and the underlying ownership suit is still pending.
