The Lagos State Ministry of Housing has warned allottees in its public estates that violating allocation terms could trigger legal action, at a stakeholder forum in Agbowa-Ikosi, Epe Division.
The Lagos State government has warned residents of its housing estates that breaching allocation terms could attract legal action, saying public housing must be protected by responsible conduct from allottees.
The warning was issued by the permanent secretary in the Lagos State Ministry of Housing, Abdulhafis Toriola, at a stakeholder engagement and public enlightenment forum organised for residents of state-owned estates at Agbowa-Ikosi in Epe Division. Toriola, who was represented by Bukade Idowu-Koya, director of the legal department, said government investment in estate infrastructure must be complemented by responsible conduct and regular maintenance from residents.
Director of estates Olukemi Fosudo warned against unauthorised structural alterations, commercial activities and other breaches of residential estate guidelines, and said residents must obtain prior approval before modifying buildings or installing solar inverter systems. She added that allottees remain responsible for breaches committed by their tenants, and stressed the need for regular estate maintenance, payment of required contributions and insurance premiums, and cooperation with facility managers.
The forum also heard from the traditional ruler of Agbowa-Ikosi, Oba Saliu Monsoru, who called for collective action on residents' challenges, and from Choice City Estate chairman Olabiyi Fosina, who praised the government for providing solar-powered streetlights, perimeter fencing, roads and additional water supply points while appealing for a shopping complex, recreational facilities, an estate hall, completion of outstanding roads and more streetlights.
Representatives of the police, the Lagos State Fire Service, the Lagos State Real Estate Regulatory Authority, the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency, the Lagos State Mortgage Board and other agencies attended the session. Fosudo congratulated Choice City Housing Estate, Agbowa on its recognition for resilience and effective management, urging other estates to maintain their facilities and comply with government regulations.
