The Lagos State Government will begin the controlled demolition of the fire-ravaged Great Nigeria Insurance (GNI) House on Lagos Island, nearly 10 months after a devastating inferno swept through the high-rise building.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) disclosed the plan in a public safety advisory issued by its Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu.
Oke-Osanyintolu said the demolition was approved following a structural assessment by relevant agencies, which confirmed that the building posed a significant risk to public safety. He explained that the exercise would be conducted under controlled conditions and in accordance with global best practices to minimise risks and protect lives and property.
The immediate vicinity of the building will be cordoned off throughout the operation, with access restricted to prevent members of the public from entering the danger zone. Temporary traffic diversions will be implemented on adjoining roads to enable the demolition team to work safely and protect motorists and other road users.
He warned that the exercise could produce noise and dust, urging residents, traders and business owners in the area to remain patient and cooperate with emergency responders and traffic management officials. He also advised motorists and members of the public to stay away from the affected area where possible, take alternative routes and obey safety instructions and diversion signs.
LASEMA said it would work with other relevant state agencies to coordinate safety measures and ensure the operation is carried out smoothly without endangering the public, reaffirming its commitment to improving public safety across the state.
