A late-night fire has destroyed a one-storey building housing several shops and residential apartments near the Jackson Park traffic light in the central business district of Koforidua in Ghana's Eastern Region.

The fire, which started at about 11 p.m. on Saturday, October 3, 2026, gutted the building located next to the Koforidua Central Market, destroying businesses including the Kwaku Showboy Boutique and Mama Pee Collections as well as other properties.

Personnel from the New Juaben Metro and Eastern Regional commands of the Ghana National Fire Service contained the blaze after responding to distress calls from residents. The cause of the fire remains unknown, although residents who witnessed its outbreak alerted the fire service after making several calls for assistance.

The scale of the blaze resulted in extensive destruction, with affected shop owners assessing their losses amid reports that property worth millions of cedis was destroyed. A firefighter sustained injuries during the operation after being struck by falling debris and was receiving emergency treatment at the Central Hospital.

Eastern Regional Minister Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, accompanied by the Municipal Chief Executives for New Juaben South and North, Ransford Owusu Boakye and Samuel Adongo, and Regional Police Commander DCOP Joseph Owusu-Bempah, visited the scene during the rescue operation.

The Ghana National Fire Service and the Police have commenced investigations to establish the cause of the fire, and the scene has been cordoned off as affected business owners work to assess the extent of the damage and account for their losses.
