The project was commissioned by President William Ruto in March 2026, and Omollo said the first phase had developed into a planned residential community with supporting infrastructure and amenities. "Phase I is now fully occupied, with all 220 completed homes providing families with modern and dignified living spaces," he said in a statement.
According to the PS, residents have access to paved walkways, roads and parking spaces, while the estate features landscaped green spaces and recreational areas alongside lighting infrastructure intended to support security within the community.
Omollo said the benefits of the project extended beyond the provision of housing, with construction and subsequent occupation creating economic opportunities for local artisans, youth, suppliers, traders and service providers. "The completed phase has also become an economic hub," he said, adding that increased demand for goods and services around the estate continues to circulate income within the local economy.
He described the development as an example of how investment in affordable housing can have an impact beyond residential units by supporting livelihoods and stimulating local economic activity. The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration continues to support the project by facilitating security and safeguarding the development and its residents, he said.
The project forms part of the government's wider affordable housing programme under the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), which identifies housing as a priority area for economic transformation. Omollo linked the progress at Kakamega to the government's broader plans for Kenya's next phase of transformation beyond Vision 2030, saying the success stories emerging from BETA were providing a foundation for that phase.
