More than 70 shacks were destroyed by fire at the Forman Road Extension informal settlement in Durban's Ward 25, leaving over 100 residents homeless and two people injured.
More than 100 residents of an informal settlement in Durban have been left homeless after a fire destroyed more than 70 shacks in Ward 25, Forman Road.
Two residents sustained injuries in the blaze and are receiving medical treatment at a nearby hospital.
eThekwini Municipality spokesperson Senzo Mzila said the cause of the fire is being investigated.
"eThekwini Fire and Emergency Services responded to a severe blaze at the Forman Road Extension Informal Settlement in Ward 25," Mzila said. "Despite difficult access and the steep terrain our firefighters worked tirelessly to contain the fire and prevent further spread."
Informal settlements remain a significant part of Durban's housing landscape, where shack fires can spread rapidly through densely built dwellings and often displace entire communities.
