Ghana Minister Details Flood Defence and Housing Expansion Plans

Written on

Ghana is ramping up flood preparedness measures ahead of the rainy season while pushing an expanded national housing agenda. The update to Parliament also includes progress on stalled projects and new reforms targeting housing delivery and water systems.

Ghana’s Works, Housing and Water Resources Minister briefed Parliament on national flood preparedness and housing expansion strategies in Accra. He outlined a series of interventions aimed at reducing flood risks ahead of the rainy season through drainage upgrades, dredging works, and improved coordination among implementing agencies.

The ministry also detailed ongoing affordable housing projects in the Volta and Ashanti regions, alongside efforts to revive the long-stalled Saglemi Housing Project through a strategic investor arrangement. These initiatives are part of a broader push to expand access to decent housing across the country.

Additional updates covered persistent water supply challenges, coastal protection works, and plans to reintroduce a Rent Bill to strengthen rental housing regulation. These reforms are intended to improve infrastructure resilience and housing governance.

Going forward, government says implementation will be phased and closely monitored as it seeks to address infrastructure deficits while responding to increasing climate and urban pressures.
