FMBN Opens Mortgage Path for Nigerians Abroad to Buy Homes Back Home
Written on
Nigerians living abroad will soon have a formal route to mortgage-backed homeownership in Nigeria. FMBN’s new Diaspora NHF scheme could channel more diaspora money into residential property while reducing reliance on informal transactions.
The Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN) will launch its Diaspora National Housing Fund Mortgage Loan on August 7, 2026, in London, creating a formal financing route for eligible Nigerians abroad to purchase homes in Nigeria. The scheme allows diaspora participants to register for the National Housing Fund and contribute remotely before applying for mortgage finance.
Under the programme framework, eligible contributors can access mortgages of up to ₦50 million, with a maximum 15-year repayment period, subject to eligibility and repayment capacity. The initiative is designed to channel more diaspora capital into formal residential development while giving overseas buyers a regulated alternative to informal property transactions.
For developers, the scheme could unlock a significant new pool of housing demand as Nigeria seeks to deepen mortgage access and attract diaspora investment.
