Zambia hands COMESA title deed for new Lusaka headquarters

Written on

President Hakainde Hichilema has handed over the title deed for land earmarked for COMESA's new headquarters, with the bloc holding its 25th summit of heads of state and government in Harare.

Zambia has officially handed over the title deed for land designated for the construction of the new headquarters of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa.

President Hakainde Hichilema handed the title deed to COMESA chairperson and Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa at the 25th Summit of Heads of State and Government in Harare. Mnangagwa subsequently handed it over to COMESA Secretary-General Chileshe Mpundu Kapwepwe.

The Zambian government said the gesture marked a significant milestone in the country's commitment to supporting regional integration and strengthening COMESA's institutional capacity. “The new headquarters will further cement Lusaka's position as a key hub for regional cooperation and economic development within the COMESA bloc,” it stated.

The handover took place as regional leaders gathered to deliberate on strategies aimed at advancing trade, investment and sustainable development across the region.

COMESA has been based in Lusaka since 1981, when it was known as the Preferential Trade Area for Eastern and Southern African States. The organisation was later rebranded, restructured and upgraded to COMESA under a new treaty.
