VETA Kigamboni College Construction Reaches 85 Per Cent in Dar es Salaam

Written on

Construction of a new VETA vocational college at Gezaulole in Kigamboni, Dar es Salaam, has reached 85 per cent completion, with the first courses expected to begin in November.

Construction of a new Vocational Education and Training Authority (VETA) college at Gezaulole in Somangila Ward, Kigamboni, Dar es Salaam, has reached 85 per cent completion, according to officials who inspected the site on Friday.

Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Dr Hussein Mohamed Omar, expressed satisfaction with the progress, saying the classrooms and workshops under construction meant some courses could begin at the college in November. He urged VETA to ensure the project benefits local residents and to keep municipal leaders informed so that they can encourage students to enrol.

Dr Omar also advised the project team to incorporate rainwater harvesting to help address potential water shortages linked to climate change and to adopt energy-efficient designs, including appropriate use of fans and air conditioners, as well as tree planting in open spaces to improve the environment.

VETA Director General Anthony Kasore said the project is being implemented through the force account method by the Dar es Salaam Regional Vocational Education and Services Centre under the supervision of VETA headquarters. Construction began on 26 May 2023, with the first phase involving 19 buildings estimated to cost 3.2 billion Tanzanian shillings and a second phase of five buildings estimated at 1.17 billion shillings, bringing the total to 24 buildings.

Once complete, the college will accommodate 675 students pursuing long-term courses and 2,000 undertaking short-term training, and will provide boarding facilities for 320 students divided equally between boys and girls. Training can begin before all construction is finished, and a short course in basic driving has already started at the college.
