Saglemi Housing Project: First 700 units to be ready by March 2027, President Mahama says

President John Dramani Mahama has said the first 700 units of the long-delayed Saglemi Housing Project will be ready for commissioning by March 2027, as the redevelopment of the 5,000-unit estate advances.

President John Dramani Mahama has expressed confidence that the long-delayed Saglemi Housing Project will finally be completed and handed over to Ghanaian families, with the first 700 housing units expected to be ready for commissioning by March 2027.

The President made the commitment when he inspected the project site to assess progress on the redevelopment of the estate, which was originally conceived as a 5,000-unit affordable housing project. The first phase will deliver 1,500 housing units, with developer LMI Group committing to complete 700 units by March 2027 and all 1,500 units by December 2027.

President Mahama recalled that the Saglemi project began under the late President Professor John Evans Atta Mills and continued during his previous administration, before stalling following a change of government, legal challenges and investigations. He said the prolonged abandonment exposed the site to vandalism, with electrical cables, fittings and other fixtures reportedly stolen, prompting government to partner with the private sector and select LMI to complete the project.

He said the estate would benefit from supporting infrastructure along the corridor, including improved road, water, digital and railway connectivity, and that surplus water from a treatment plant serving the Dawa Industrial Park would be supplied to Saglemi. The President added that the project fits into government's broader Green Digital City concept, creating a new urban growth zone.

On home ownership, President Mahama said several financial institutions were developing mortgage products to support prospective homeowners, with the Home Ownership Fund and other institutions prepared to support the required 10 percent deposit. He also announced that Saglemi would form part of a broader national housing programme, including a District Housing Scheme supported by GHc500 million allocated in the 2026 Budget.

LMI Group Chief Executive Officer Kofi Aduhene reaffirmed the developer's commitment to delivering the first 700 units by March 2027 and the full 1,500 units by the end of the year, adding that construction is progressing with materials secured and underground electrical cabling being installed.
