Kenya's environment authority has invited public comments on five impact assessments for social and affordable housing developments in Mugumo-ini Ward, Lang'ata, that would deliver a combined 7,128 units and could relocate some Kibra residents.
The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has invited public comments on five Environmental and Social Impact Assessment reports for proposed social and affordable housing developments in Mugumo-ini Ward, Lang'ata Constituency, Nairobi.
Notices published in the Kenya Gazette on October 23 identify the State Department for Housing and Urban Development as the project proponent. The five projects are planned to deliver a combined 7,128 housing units, with four lots of 1,386 units each and Lot 2 carrying 1,584 units.
The developments will comprise multi-storey residential blocks with one-roomed, two-roomed and three-roomed social housing units as well as studio, two-bedroom and three-bedroom affordable homes, according to the notices. Lots 1, 3, 4 and 5 will each have 14 blocks of ground plus eight upper floors, while Lot 2 will have 16 blocks, with internal access roads, water supply and storage, shopping stalls, children's play areas and parking.
The assessment reports identify project-affected persons as a group requiring attention before construction and clearance. Gazette Notice No. 16886 for the proposed Kibra Lot 5 development requires the proponent to complete and verify the register of affected persons before displacement, provide agreed facilitation and support before clearance, coordinate clearance with livelihood-restoration measures and maintain grievance channels.
The reports also call for priority attention to vulnerable affected persons, including persons with disabilities, women-headed households, elderly people and children.
