Nandi County gets KSh18bn housing push with 3,500 homes and student hostels

Written on

Kenya's Affordable Housing Programme is backing a KSh18 billion investment in Nandi County expected to deliver 3,500 housing units, hostels for 6,000 students and 15 modern markets.

Nandi County is set to expand access to affordable housing and student accommodation under a KSh18 billion investment in housing projects, hostels and modern markets, as the national government advances its development programme across the region.

President William Ruto inspected the construction of the Kaptumo Affordable Housing Project and the Kaptumo Modern Market in Aldai Constituency, highlighting investments aimed at expanding housing options and supporting local economic activity.

Under the Affordable Housing Programme, the KSh18 billion investment in Nandi County is expected to deliver 3,500 housing units, hostels accommodating 6,000 students from universities, technical colleges and Kenya Medical Training Colleges, and 15 modern markets.

The housing component is intended to expand the availability of residential units, while the student hostels will provide accommodation for learners pursuing higher education and technical training. Officials said the inclusion of modern markets would link housing development with opportunities for traders to operate in improved business environments.

The inspection of the Kaptumo projects formed part of wider development activities across Nandi County. These include a KSh270 million 50-bed inpatient block under construction at Meteitei Sub-County Hospital in Tinderet, which is expected to lift the hospital's capacity from 66 to 116 beds, and a KSh2.1 billion electricity connectivity programme targeting 23,000 households. Road investments are also expected to improve the movement of agricultural produce and strengthen links between communities and markets.
