President John Dramani Mahama has asked the Finance Minister to set aside GH¢300 million in the 2027 budget to build 250 apartments for police officers, in a bid to ease congestion in the Service’s barracks.
President John Dramani Mahama has directed Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson to make provision for GH¢300 million in the 2027 Budget to construct 250 apartments for police officers, saying the accommodation investment is intended to reduce overcrowding in police barracks.
He announced the directive at the commissioning of an ultra-modern 85-bed ward complex at the Ghana Police Hospital on Tuesday, October 13, where he said better accommodation would complement other measures to improve the welfare and operational effectiveness of the Ghana Police Service.
“I’ve requested the Minister of Finance to provide GH¢300 million in the 2027 budget to construct 250 new apartments for the police to ease congestion in some of your barracks,” Mahama said.
Beyond the housing plan, the President said the government was strengthening the Service’s operational capacity through additional vehicles and protective equipment. He said a second batch of 40 armoured vehicles was expected to arrive in the coming weeks, following the delivery of 50 vehicles to the Police Service in December 2025, and that additional body armour was being procured for officers on operational duties.
He said the interventions, alongside improvements to police healthcare infrastructure, formed part of efforts to ensure personnel had better living conditions, adequate protection and the resources needed to carry out their responsibilities.
The GH¢300 million for the apartments is expected to be provided for when the 2027 Budget is presented, and the number of units would ease congestion in some of the Service’s barracks, according to the announcement.
